Vignette: Family Matters
It was a hectic day. At oh-dear-Faranth-it's-early in the morning the eggs hatched, and Masoth suddenly changed everything when he stumbled in front of Niena. She had been too besotted to notice much else as she fed and oiled the blue for the first time, and her family had presumably gone back to sleep by the time she made it to the hatching breakfast feast. Then she slept soundly until Masoth awakened her to feed and oil him again, and slept some more once he was sated and asleep himself.
It wasn't until late evening that she properly saw her family. She had, of course, sought them out when she announced Masoth's name, but she wasn't really paying attention to them. Now when she entered the living caverns she saw all four -- her mother, father, older brother Herrel and younger brother Sevel. After politely greeting the various riders and remaining dignitaries she grabbed some klah and food and headed over toward the small group.
Her mother was the first to notice and react, nigh on jumping up and giving her a hug. "Sweetie, congratulations! The first rider in our family for as long as I know -- we're so proud of you!" Her father didn't get up, but did smile and add "And Masoth is quite a handsome blue, once he got his egg off." Herrel got up and held out his hand awkwardly. "Congrats, sis. I guess I won't have to worry about beating people up if they pick on you any more." And then it was Sevel's turn. He scowled and glared at the table until their mother prompted him to say something. "I suppose you're happy with yourself, even if it is just a blue." he managed.
Niena was somewhat surprised when her mother hugged her, but not at all unhappy. At her father's words she smiled and replied "I think so too. I always loved the sky when it was that color." Herrel got a handshake and his comment warranted a smile and the note that he might have to get in line at that point. Even Sevel didn't phase her. For him she had the pointed comment "I'll take Masoth over not even being searched any day."
Her mother and father were proud of her, and her older brother was still protective. Sevel was obnoxious as usual, if not slightly more so. Perhaps not everything had changed with her impression.
